Easter, con't.

I was deliberate in making sure that Westley's first Easter basket was adorable. I had waited so many years for that opportunity and loved doing it. It included locally made chocolates, some sweet bunny books (and, in the case of "Guess How Much I Love You," an accompanying stuffed bunny) and a knitted chocolate bunny I purchased from a colleague of mine. (I like how it looked kind of timeless and old-fashioned.)

The Easter Bunny even brought the pups special doggy carrot treats:

We had brunch with my in-laws and spent some time taking photos outside, one of the things I treasure about that day.

Brian and I laughed later at our attempts to keep Easter as non-commercial as possible for Westley. He received baskets at our house, from my sister and my mother-in-law. It was all very sweet and thoughtful. He won't remember anyway, I guess. I do imagine we'll want to try again in 2012.

Snuggly Meowsers

My brother-in-law Eric visited this weekend. As Meow Meow was lounging on my computer bag in the living room, I overheard this comment from E:

"Meow Meow, look at you. You're like a pillow. With a head."

Best furiends

Westley and his best pal Meow Meow both weigh in at 16 pounds, making them a very even match ... fur now. The weights are official, too, as Meow Meow has been to the vet and Westley has been to the pediatrician already this month.

Why do we even buy beds?!

Here is the cat bed. Where is the cat?

Here is the cat, but where is the baby?

Puppy checkup

Brian and I took Dakota, Lilly & Meow Meow in for their annual vet checkup. It's always a fun -- and expensive -- January task.

Lucky for us, they were healthy -- and well-behaved. We also didn't have to remove the mattress and box spring from our bed frame to chase down Meow Meow and fight her to get her in the cat taxi. That happened last year, and we actually had to call the vet and let them know we'd be late to our appointment because of it. This year, though, we did have to get Westley to a sitter so we could handle the three pets without having to worry about him, too.

At 99 pounds, Dakota is about 15 pounds heavier this year. More runs and fewer treats will be in store in 2011. (Sorry, Snoders.) We've been through this before with our sweet, lazy Kodysaurus.

Typical ...

I can't even count the number of goodies Santa ... and grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends ... gave West for Christmas. But not even two weeks after the fact, here's my little pumpkin and his partner in crime playing with an empty cardboard diaper box. Priceless.

Christmas morning at home

We started off our Christmas Day celebrations with a quiet morning at home with our customary cinnamon French toast and gift exchange. I vowed to only snap a few pictures so I could actively enjoy the day without the preoccupation of capturing it all in photos. A few scenes:

Westley was more interested in the wrapping paper and the tape on the packages than the gifts themselves. And, of course, he loved a $4 stocking stuffer more than the $80 floor gym. It was wonderful.

As always, Santa came for the pets. Dakota and Lilly got new collars, rawhides and new bones. Meow Meow got a kitty toy ... and liquid cat nip in a squirt bottle. Meow!

Brian was very thoughtful in his gift-giving. He gave me two wonderful books about raising boys and, in a fitting complement, a Shiatsu back-massaging chair cushion. Ahhh.

His favorite gift from me was a recordable book. I enlisted some help so that Westley's Great-Grandma can read my boys the story "The Very First Christmas" every Christmas.

LOL!

Until I saw it randomly featured on LinkWithin (the cool widget that shows thumbnail images from related blog posts under each of my blog posts), I had forgotten that I'd taken this photo of Meow Meow:

Look familiar?

September highlights

What a fun, wonderful month. In addition to all of the things I've posted about, here are some other highlights from the month:

Nine years!

On Sept. 1, Brian and I celebrated our nine-year wedding anniversary with dinner at Sabor. With little Westley in the picture, we're betting that this will be our best year yet. Cheers to that!

Here, kitty, kitty, kitty

Meow Meow (and Brian) weren't huge fans, but a pretty little orange boy kitty crashed in our garage a few nights earlier this month. When Meow Meow first spotted the kitten in our garage one evening, she started growling territorially. I could barely hear Westley fussing over Meow Meow's protests.

One morning, Dakota and Lilly scared "Butterscotch" up into our front silver maple tree. Recognizing the photo opp, I ran inside to grab my camera (see photo above). The neighbor saw us and asked if that was our new cat. Simultaneously, I said "Yes!" and Brian said, "No!"

The cat really started annoying Brian one day. We had left the garage door cracked so he could come and go as he pleased (and access the food and water we set out for him). One Sunday morning Brian called me and said, "This is why we can't have nice things." I looked in the garage, and a black-and-white kitty was perched on the roof of my car. Sigh. We joked that Butterscotch had brought a friend to the breakfast buffet. I'm happy to report that the skinny stray has a new home. I get occasional updates on him from a sweet little girl at the bus stop.

Workouts

I am so happy to be back on an exercise routine. Brian watches Westley for me on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for a bit so I can get to the YMCA. I often meet my friend Nicole there, but the chance to burn 300 or so calories and clear my mind for a little bit is so refreshing and rejuvenating.

11:11

I see 11:11 -- both in morning and at night -- all of the time. This may mean something. Or not.

Hail

We had one hail of a hail storm that dropped softball-sized hailstones on our side of town. Here's a hailstone that fell on our driveway. The storm damaged both of our cars, and I'm betting that I may need a new windshield. We're going to have an insurance adjuster come take a look at the wheels and the roof of the house.

Baby dreams

"Look at you there, just like you're floating on a cloud up in the sky.
Look at you there, just like a whisper that keeps blooming in my mind.
But now the time has come for you to sleep now my love.
Keep falling, keep falling
To sleep now my love
Keep falling, keep falling back to sleep."

What do the pets think of Westley?

Throughout my pregnancy, I think the puppies sensed that something big was up (and I don't just mean my belly). Dakota seemed more protective, Lilly a little more snuggly (if that's at all possible). Then, on the eve of Westley's scheduled birth, Brian gave the goldens a hearty scrub down. They were shampooed, clean and ready to meet their new best friend:

While we were in the hospital -- and during our first day home -- the pups stayed with my in-laws. We wrapped Westley in a doggy print receiving blanket, hoping it would capture some of that magical baby scent, and sent that home for them to sniff. And then there was the grand introduction. We probably could have predicted how both pups would react. Dakota picked up a baby blanket and pranced around the house showing it off, and Lilly gave Westley kisses.

Some things have changed, of course, for the dogs. They're not the center of attention. They don't get as much snuggle time, especially if Westley is on the couch or bed with us. We don't take as many walks, they don't get to go on car rides as often, and we haven't gone camping this summer (something very unusual for this family). But we have been spending more time at home, and we have received many visitors.

On Westley's first Saturday night, my family came to our house with dinner and to spend some time together. The pups weren't invited to the party:

Surprisingly, Dakota and Lilly don't react to Westley's screams or cries. They seem to know when we start getting stressed out by them, though, and come and sit at our feet. We're trying to teach them that the blue stuffed elephant and other baby toys are not for them. And we're pretty convinced that there's a good chance our son's first word will be "doggy".

Meow Meow knows she's more likely to find a warm lap these days, and she's taking full advantage:

It'll be fun to watch our pets become Westley's playmates. It's difficult to predict whether a two- or four-legged one will be the instigator of all the household trouble.

Meow Meow loves to hide behind our living room couch cushion. It's times like this I'm glad we own several types of pet hair removal products.

Super baby bump update

It's Super Bowl Sunday, and it's been five weeks since my last baby bump photo. Here's the latest installment. Click to see previous photos.

Here's a photo of Brian from his baby bump photographer vantage point. (You can see that Dakota & Lilly wanted to help ... a little bit too much.) Meow Meow was no different.

A quilt for Roo

Now that our Classic Pooh-themed nursery is well-established, I have my next task ahead: sewing a Classic Pooh quilt. Baby B. will not be short of quilts, even ones handmade by me. I think it's wonderful and that a child cannot have too many. I already have visions of picnics in the park, chilly afternoons at the zoo, snuggly movie nights at home or at the drive-in, etc. And this is too wonderful an experience to pass up, especially after making more quilts than I can count to coordinate with friends' baby nurseries.

I've kept my eyes open and had quilting friends watching for Classic Pooh fabrics in local quilt shops, with no such luck. So I rooted around on eBay and put together this collection of fabrics:

Mom & I plan to shop for additional pieces to round out the collection. And I still have to pick a pattern before I get the project started. (I'm considering the Lucky Stars pattern by Terry Atkinson. It's one of my favorites.)

Meow Meow gave the fabrics her official kitty cat approval by lying on them when I spread them out for the above photo, so I know I'm on the right track.
