Revolutionary Read

For book club Wednesday, we gathered at Peggy's lovely Haysville home to discuss Richard Yates' "Revolutionary Road." I finished the book right before bed Tuesday and absolutely loved the writing, imagery and drama in the tragic tale. To me, the theme was how all the characters were spending their lives pretending to be people they were not, even to the point of self-deception.

I would love to see the movie that's out now with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. I want to see if the director imaged the scenes unfolding the same way I did when I absorbed the details.

One of the things I loved about the book was how it described ordinary human experiences in an extraordinary way. Consider this excerpt, which describes two couples getting together for the evening.

"Hi!" They called to one another.
"Hi! ..." "Hi! ..."
This one glad syllable, borne up through the gathering twilight and redoubling back from the Wheelers' kitchen door, was the traditional herald of an evening's entertainment. Then came the handshakings, the stately puckered kissings, the sighs of amiable exhaustion -- "Ah-h-h"; "Who-o-o" -- suggesting that miles of hot sand had been traveled for the finding of this oasis or that living breath itself had been held, painfully, against the promise of this release. In the living room, having sipped and grimaced at the first frosty brimming of their drinks, they pulled themselves together for a moment of mutual admiration; then they sank into various postures of controlled collapse.

Brrrrr to the grrrrr

When fluffy snowflakes started to fall Tuesday, Brian was working from home. He grabbed the camera and took his lunch break outside with the pups:

Some miscellaneous photos I snapped during my Arkansas weekend trip:

Walkway, University of Arkansas campus

A charming barn near Amanda & Kurtis' house

Public mural, downtown Bentonville

Arkansas church steeple

Saturday sunset, rural Fayetteville

Wine cellar at Noodles Italian Kitchen in Fayetteville

Psssst!

Another highlight of my recent Fayetteville adventure was seeing the PostSecret exhibit at the Crystal Bridges at the Massey museum in Bentonville.

PostSecret is an amazing phenomenon in which people send in their deepest, darkest secrets anonymously on postcards. You can see new ones each week on the PostSecret Web site.

The exhibit was heart-wrenching, hilarious, reassuring and fascinating -- an interesting blend of art and pop culture.

It meant a lot to me to see it with Amanda because she and I spent time
looking at the book "PostSecret" together while Mom was in the hospital last summer. It was just something we could talk about that took our mind off everything else. It was an equally entertaining and therapeutic bonding experience.

Fayetteville thrill

This past weekend, Brian & I took a road trip to Fayetteville to visit Kurtis & Amanda and see their new home, which they purchased a few months ago. It was adorable, and I loved our visit, which included these fun highlights:

We enjoyed breakfast at Rick's Bakery, the local legendary donut place where we tasted The Best blueberry cake donut and apple fritter any of us had had. I'm pretty sure I consumed galleries just admiring the beautiful baked goods.

We watched the Razorbacks lose horribly to Auburn. It was pretty gruesome, to be honest, but college basketball is always a good time.

We saw Kurtis, who works for the university, in action during the game. (Doesn't he look official? Very impressive.)

And, while I can respect the Razorback mascot and whole "woo pig sooie" chant, I still count my lucky stars that I'm a Rock-Chalk-Jayhawk kinda girl. (See what I mean?!)

(For fun, check out definition No. 2 of "woo pig sooie" from Uban Dictionary.)

We hung out at the newlyweds' home, chatted and enjoyed spending time together, which was my favorite part of the trip. I miss my youngest sister! It was a fabulous trip, especially considering that I haven't been out to see Amanda since our girls' weekend in September. And Brian & I, believe it or not, haven't been out there together since September 2007. (I'll share a little bit more about the trip in the next couple of posts.)

Now my prayers are with them and other residents who are struggling with power outages and ice storms. My aunt & uncle, who live in the Ozarks, may be without power for up to three weeks. It's difficult to imagine.

Runnin' around

After a weekend celebrating Brian's b-day, this week has been all about getting back to a regular routine.

For starters, Brian is now officially a Verizon employee. (For those of you who don't have your finger on the pulse of the cellular industry, Verizon purchased Brian's previous employer, Alltel. This is now the fourth cellular company he has worked for without actually switching jobs. Cingular and AT&T are also on his resume.)

Pictured with the pups is a random swag item Brian was given at a company welcome dinner tonight. Dakota especially loved them and popped the two Brian brought home. After I took this photo, I asked Brian what those promotional things are called. "Thundersticks," he told me. "It's a real product." I didn't believe the ridiculous name, so I Googled it -- and was pleasantly surprised. Wikipedia shows a photo of a KU basketball game in its definition. Rock Chalk!

For me, Inauguration Day kept the newsroom hopping. (For an inside peek, check out my colleague Lori L.'s blog.) It's been a week to remember as a journalist and an American.

In other things-keeping-us-busy-this-week news, Brian & I got together with his parents, Grandmother and her visiting sister and brother-in-law for a family dinner Wednesday night.

And, so far in 2009, I've stayed true to my commitment to hit the Y at least three times a week. I wish I would've also pledged to track my mileage. This week, for instance, I put in 10.5 miles on the treadmill and eight or so miles on the bike.

Up next: Another fun weekend. Stay tuned.

TGINF! (Thank God it's nearly Friday!)

Brian's b-day party pics

Brian's 31st birthday weekend extravaganza included a guys' golf outing Saturday and a family brunch today at Granite City. But the highlight was a fabulous bowling party last night at The Alley.

Eric, center, visited from Lawrence. And some of our other friends who helped celebrate included, from left: Jeff, the b-day boy, Tony, Jeremey, Ann, Jen, me & Rob.

Brian earned the admiration of a cute little three-year-old. I teased Lexi's parents, Nick & Denise, that they'd have to pay for our marriage therapy. (Truth be told, I think Brian has finally found someone who he can relate to ...) You may have read about this little crush on Denise's blog. Here's the behind-the-scenes video of the moment she blogged about. (Need a laugh? Watch how Lexi rejects Brian when he tries to give her 10.)

Speaking of blogs, the b-day boy also made an appearance on Jaime's blog, thanks to the tasty cupcakes (thank you, Jen!) and his crazy T.

Other exciting scenes from the evening:

The biggest pizza I've ever seen ... and go-kart racing!

Additional party pics:

The guys, including Darren (pictured right of Brian).

The sisters. (Jen was thrilled to drop Kaden off with her in-laws and join us for the evening.)

The newlyweds, Sarah & Jeff.

Happy birthday to the man who has taught me to find laughter and joy in life, no matter what is thrown our way. I love you, Brian!

Simply adorable

A new year for quilting

Quilt Guild was earlier this week, the first meeting of the year. Rather than hearing from a regionally or nationally known quilter, local guild members gave presentations on a variety of topics. My favorite speaker was a man who is an accomplished quilter and quilt teacher who works by day at one of the local aerospace companies.

He showed this quilt at left, which he made from scraps. Isn't it gorgeous? I now have new inspiration for my 2009 projects!

Showing the vets their new silhouettes

Meow Meow was howlin' like a scaredy cat when we were headed to the vet on Tuesday for Dakota, Lilly & her annual checkup.

They all got a clean bill of health, and we found out that the our pups have lost a combined 15 pounds since our visit last year, when Dakota packed a hefty 100 bones (he's now 95), and Lilly weighed in at 85 (she's now a svelte 75). Woo hoo! I chock it up to a more active lifestyle for us all. In your face, New Year's resolutions!

Gettin' his game on (again)

Brian's 31st birthday is Friday, and today we welcomed a new addition to our household: a PS3. It's appropriate, I guess, considering that his 30th birthday gift was his Wii.

Earlier tonight, he was getting really excited about trying out a couple of games that he rented.

Me: "How old are you turning again?"

Him: "13."

Me: "Now that sounds about right."

With the new game console comes the ability for us now to watch Blu-Ray, so I won't complain too much.

Another bonus: He has one more thing with which to occupy himself while I'm blogging.

Ice, ice baby

Today's youth group activity was to go ice-skating at the Wichita Ice Center. I haven't been there in ages, and it took me awhile to get the rhythm down again.

Sunday afternoon is a great time to go because it's not very crowded. I had forgotten what great exercise ice-skating is and spent some time practicing turning circles, which I used to love to do when I ice-skated a lot as a teenager.

Here's a short clip I recorded as I was skating and ended with a loop. WARNING: This clip may cause motion sickness:

Brian worked on his hockey stop ...

... and his penguin-esque belly flop:

Brian & I wrapped up the afternoon by skating while holding hands and singing along to one of my current favorite songs, Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours." (Insert "ahhhhhhhhs" or gags here.) I found a cool version of the song on iTunes. It's much better than the one that's commonly played on the radio. I love the lyrics. Consider this excerpt: "Listen to the music of the moment, dance and sing. We're just one big family. And it's our God-intended right to be loved."

Cross collection

After this morning's church service and Connect meeting, I admired the cloudless sky and snapped the photo pictured above at Aldersgate.

Last year, I discovered how much I enjoy photographing crosses. Here are some images I posted on this blog in 2008:

By the light of the moon

On Saturday night, Brian & I finally went to see the amazing "Our Bodies" exhibit at Exploration Place. It was impressive and memorable and left me pondering what a genius engineer God truly is. It also was a humbling reminder about how miraculous the human body is, a balance of fragility and strength.

Another beautiful element to our outing was the gorgeous moon. In case you missed it, NASA said that Saturday's moon would appear to be the biggest and brightest this year. It was breath-taking:

"What do you want? You ... you want the moon? Just say the word and I'll throw a lasso around it and pull it down. Hey! That's a pretty good idea! I'll give you the moon ... "
-- George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) in "It's a Wonderful Life"

Quilter in training

After working from home and doing chores Saturday, Mom & I went to our favorite local quilt store to sign up for a class we're taking together in the coming months and do a little bit of shopping. (I received a gift certificate for Christmas, so my purchase of a yard of fabric and eight fat quarters cost me only $2. Woo-hoo!)

While we were there, I played with Halley, the store dog. (She's named after Halley's Comet.) She's a sweet little thing, and it's always fun to see her when I'm in there. This time, she was stylin' in her cute shirt:

It must have been a true dog day at the quilt shop, because most of the fabric I selected is a soft Moda flannel that features a cute dog that reminded me of Dakota & Lilly. I'll add it to my stash of baby quilt fabric.

While I was there, I pointed out to Lisa, my friend and the store's owner, that we were dressed similarly with vests and a gray-and-black color scheme. She had remembered a past We Didn't Plan This occurrence at her store and suggested I post this picture:

Figures ...

I'm working from home a bit this morning on some breaking news and have been doing short live telephone interviews on MSNBC, which has been an interesting and amazing opportunity.

Meanwhile, Dakota & Lilly are fast asleep in my bedroom, and Meow Meow has been catching countless catnaps. Must be tough to be a pet on a Saturday morning in this household.

Bless you, Dakota!

This trick has got to be my favorite of Dakota's:

Unique antiques

Brian's 31st birthday is just around the corner, and he asked for a Hoosier Cabinet or something similar to refinish. We took a break from Christmas decoration deconstruction this weekend and, during errands to return a few Christmas gifts, went to our favorite antique store, Paramount Antique Mall. (That's where I purchased my cool nightstand/bookcase in April.)

The piece of furniture is a gift to Brian from my parents, his parents and me. It needs a little work, and he says he's looking forward to the project. I suspect that he had so much fun doing our various house projects this fall (tiling, bathroom upgrades, etc.) that he wants to keep it up. I say more power to him! Especially when I get to reap the beautiful benefits of his work.

We've also added a few treasures from the antique mall to our home since April. They include:

a candle sconce we've added to our living room,

wall accents we hung in our bedroom,

cabinet with lots of storage for Brian's nightstand and an old hotel heater grate cover,

and an old church pew, which now sits in our living room and helps to create an entryway of sorts. I just happened to already have made a quilt that looks great on it. (It's one that I worked on while spending time with Mom in the hospital last summer, so it holds special meaning to me.) We found the cute throw pillows at Target to tie everything together.
